More than half of all injuries in Alberta construction are to workers in their first year at a company, regardless of age or experience.

This first-year risk window is driven by time constraints, team culture and limited experience — factors that show up every day on the job site and can be influenced by the crews working with first-year workers.

First-year workers were injured by:

Being struck by an object that was swinging, slipping or falling.
Straining or impacting their back or spine.
Falling from ladders, steps or stairs.

Why are first-year workers particularly vulnerable?

Limited experience with performing demanding tasks safely, while also getting used to a new team and a new job site.
Limited time for pre-work briefings, follow-up questions, on-site supervision and technique correction, which are critical to new workers.
